Food Fails and Food Favourites 2019 – Happy New Year

For every five dishes and food experiments that go well there is probably going to be one that fails. Whether it just did not come together at all or it just fell a little flat, that just happens when you cook and that is totally okay. Here are some of my food fails and food favourites of 2019.

Happy new year, everybody! I hope you all had a great new year’s eve and you are feeling well this morning. Originally I was not sure whether or not to write this post, not because I want my cooking to look impeccable (look at some of my old photos, some are horrible) but because I thought I was just a day late. Then again food fails are always entertaining especially at a time when people are super serious about their new year’s resolutions. I don’t make those because just feel like it sets you up for disappointment. Rather than making an unreasonable resolution I try to give myself a goal that is attainable. Zero waste is practically impossible where I live, but reduce waste wherever I can. In that realm also be more mindful when grocery shopping to reduce food waste, which I hate and feel very guilty about. And rather than eating no junk food, eat healthier throughout the week and make homemade fast food instead when you are craving it. At the end of the day that will still be better because you know what is in it. Those are just some of the food related ones because that is kind of my knock-off brand. Obviously I’d also like to exercise better and drink more water, which are still attainable guidelines. What are some of your guidelines for this year?

Food Fails 2019

Overall I have not had that many failures this year, although one massive fail I forgot to take photos of. When making lemon cookies I read the recipe wrong and made a baking sheet of lemon crackers, you can imagine what that looked like. I still dipped them into leftover frosting though, so it was fine. Every food fail has a lesson in there somewhere.

Spaghetti Ice Cream

A German specialty this ice cream sundae resembles a plate of spaghetti with tomato sauce and parmesan. Everything went wrong with this one. The low-fat cream tasted horrible and got soupy underneath, it was super hard to get the ice cream through the ricer and the white chocolate on top tasted like chalk. That was especially disappointing considering that I went to the store for that chocolate.

Salt and Vinegar Roasted Potatoes with Gyro-Style Cauliflower

The roasted potatoes did not have enough or any vinegar flavour and the cauliflower was too soft and too sour. I still like the idea but some more experimenting will go into that one.

Calamari al Ajillo One Pot Rice

This was my attempt at making a one pot dish with seafood, which came out fine but not great. There was not enough garlic flavour and the calamari just didn’t get enough colour and texture. Overall it was just too soft. I will try again but maybe it is impossible to make this with just one pot because you overcook the calamari.

Food favourites 2019

Vegan Mushroom Burger

I don’t crave burgers often but when I do I opt for this vegan mushroom burger. There is always a batch in the freezer that can be fried up quickly to be served with a variety of dishes. That was a great find.

Thai-Style Red Curry

This curry has quickly become a staple and I make it very often, usually without any meat. It is flavourful and complex and it has great texture. As it turns out I can handle and enjoy a lot more heat than I thought.

Strawberry Yogurt Layer Cake

This was one of the best birthday cakes I ever had. It was delicious and easy to make. Overall it did not even have as many calories as most other cakes. The strawberry sauce drizzle looked great and needed no decorating skill whatsoever.

So there you have some of my food fails and some of my favourites. They were all good in their own way. Sometime you don’t succeed on the first try you just don’t see fancy TV cooks fail as they are recipe developing. It happens to them, too. So never feel bad when something didn’t turn out the way you wanted it to. As long as it is edible I don’t get too mad about it. Some of my favourites were experiments, too. They just happened to turn out better, they could just as well have been a failure. I wish you all a wonderful day and thank you for subscribing, it means a lot to me.
