Country Bread – The Easiest Bread You Can Bake

This country loaf bread is delicious and best of all easy to make, with all the ingredients most likely in your pantry. It is your basic white bread which goes with anything and everybody needs one of those. So if you happened to run out of bread and don’t want to or can’t go to the store, then this recipe is your best friend. When warm it is very crispy but when fully cold it becomes soft and tender, perfect for sandwiches.

So we have all hopefully been able to stick around at home for the past few days, if we were privileged enough to do so. Some people don’t have that possibility and I hope you all stay healthy. Now is maybe the time you might start running out of things at home, especially fresh produce and bread. I know I am down to some onions, garlic and half a bell pepper as far as fresh produce is concerned. Now it is the freezer’s time to shine along with all the cans of beans. Obviously you can still go shopping for food, but you want to avoid having to go constantly. As I had run out bread I decided to bake this very easy country loaf and a few others, which I then portioned and froze to last all week. Considering that all the flour has sold out some of you probably had the same idea. This is one of the easiest breads you can make, even more so if you have a machine to do all the kneading.

Easy Country Loaf Bread

• 500 gr all-purpose flour
• 30 gr semolina (optional)
• 2 tsp salt
• 20 gr fresh baker’s yeast (or 1 packet dry-active yeast)
• 350 gr luke-warm water
• 2 tbl olive oil

  1. Mix the flour, semolina and salt in a bowl and make a well in the middle. Pour in some of the water and dissolve the yeast, leaving it to foam up for a few minutes. Add more water (always holding some back) and the olive oil and start kneading the dough with the dough hook or by hand. Knead for about five minutes (maybe ten by hand) until you have a smooth and elastic dough. Cover and leave to prove until it has doubled in size.
  2. Punch the air out of the dough and knead it into a smooth ball, shape that into desired loaf form (or put it into a loaf tin) on some baking paper, cover it up and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  3. Place a heat resistant bowl with water into the bottom of the oven and preheat to 230°C.
  4. Bake the bread until golden for about 35 minutes. For a darker bottom carefully flip the bread and let the bottom brown a little for just a few minutes.
Tip: For a crusty bread consider baking the bread in a preheated Dutch oven.
